CSUN - Assistive Technology Conference

I have had the pleasure of attending the CSUN 2007 Assistive Technology Conference. Many well known vendors such as Cambium Learning Systems (IntelliTools and Kurzweil), DynaVox, Ablenet, Mayer Johnson, and Prentke Romich. As a therapist, I have always thought it natural to infuse asssitve technology with language and literacy therapy for my clients. As clinic director of an established and thriving private practice, I was able to do a lot of forward thinking in terms of direction for the clinic. As a therapist, I was energized by being in the company of like-minded people.

I attended a session on the need to heighten the expectations for users of augmentative communication and strategies to support language learning and expression (written and verbal) for AAC users. It is true that attending professional development sessions can confirm your knowledge, teach new knowledge, and/or expand current knowledge. I was happy to have benefitted in all three ways. A new exciting idea was the use of language sampling using LAM and PERT technology for AAC users. Instead of writing and analyzing MLU for my AAC users, I can now utilize software and the capabilities of their systems to language sample beyond the therapy session with me!

I felt plenty of confirmation as Speech & Language Consultant continues as an innovative practice. We have decided to publicly expand our social communication groups to include people with AAC devices as well as provide access evaluations in homes for assistive technology.

Stay tuned for the newsletter, The Empowered Parent, which will feature focus on Assistive Technology!
