Access Methods with AAC

This online training provides a basic review of access methods that can be used to operate an AAC device. Device options that can assist those with physical disabilities who access AAC by various methods will be demonstrated. Tips and strategies will be discussed for specific access methods including touch, head pointing, eye gaze, joystick, single switch, and dual switch scanning. Switch scanning, including device options and considerations for user ability, will be discussed and demonstrated.

This introductory level seminar is appropriate for OTs, PTs, SLPs, assistive technologists, educators, parents, and those who support and are interested in exploring access options for AAC device users.

This informative, on-line session will be hosted by David Kay, M.Ed., OTR

David earned his Master's degree in Special Education Assistive Technology from the George Mason University in 2003. He has provided consultation services to school systems through a state assistive technology project for students with technology needs, including those with speech related disabilities. David is also a registered occupational therapist, and has been practicing since receiving his degree from the University of Florida in 1997. He has worked as a clinician in acute care, rehabilitation and outpatient settings with children and adults with moderate to severe cognitive, neurologic and physical disabilities. Just before joining PRC in 2006, David was providing assistive technology assessment and support services to Federal government disability resource centers in Washington, D.C.
